Paleo Smoothie

3 01 2010

One of the recipes we love to make is one of our own creation. Others make similar smoothies, but this is the particular one we usually make for breakfast each day.

Paleo Smoothie

Layer the following in your blender and blend for 2-3 minutes:

  • 2 cups organic spinach
  • 1/2- 1 cup frozen fruit (mango and pineapple taste especially good)
  • 2 T canola oil
  • 1 banana
  • 1-2 scoops egg protein powder (although, we will often omit this and have whatever protein was for dinner the night before. This morning we had diced steak and scrambled eggs, obviously separate from the smoothie)
  • 1/2 cup water

SERVES 2

Variations:

  • 1 T flaxseed oil
  • 1-2 T coconut milk/oil
  • a couple baby carrots
  • strawberries, blueberries, and kiwi
  • any other greens that you like
  • fresh fruit
  • ice

As long as you have a good mix of fruits and veggies, healthy fats, and protein you’re good to go! We promise, you won’t even taste the spinach. :)

Post to comments if you try it!

Part II

2 01 2010

So last night we definitely enjoyed ourselves and consumed all of the non-paleo foods and drinks that are associated with New Year’s Eve parties.  Let’s just say that we woke up this morning more than ready to begin our new lifestyle!  Onward with our goals to be completed by June 30, 2010:

Kirk: lose 20 pounds of fat/have 10% or lower body fat. Increased energy and strength. Become a better cook!

Kate: gain 10-15 pounds of muscle and increase overall strength and tone. Create new paleo baking recipes.

Today we both felt pretty ill and struggled to eat paleo. Tonight Kirk made butternut squash soup and grilled chicken. The soup recipe is courtesy of the awesome paleo mama and can be found here: Paleo Butternut Squash Soup.

We made a few changes. Kirk left out the coconut milk, added roasted garlic, and crumbled bacon with the seeds. It tasted amazing!

delicious on a cold day

We  are also caffeine addicts so this should be interesting to see how well we can go cold turkey. No more peppermint mocha lattes from Starbucks, that’s for sure!

What is your resolution this year? Please post to comments!

Happy New Years! Part I

2 01 2010

Well if you didn’t guess it already, our New Year’s resolution is to eat in the paleo style 100% of the time for 6 months. In case you are not familiar with this, it entails the following:

  • lean meat, fish, seafood, and eggs
  • non-starchy veggies
  • fruit
  • moderate healthy fats (olive, canola,  etc.)
  • nuts and seeds
  • NO grains or cereals
  • NO legumes (this includes soy and peanuts)
  • NO dairy
  • NO processed food (if it’s from a box, you most likely shouldn’t eat it)
  • NO sugar, NO caffeine, NO vinegar, NO artificial sweeteners/colors, and NO alcohol

Most people do not eat this way 100% of the time, but usually shoot for 80-85%. This is a lifestyle, not a diet. The beauty of it is that it helps you get to your ideal weight and health.

To be continued…..

In the coming days….

29 12 2009

…prepare yourselves for a new paleo blog. 6 MONTHS of 100% paleo eating. Sound challenging? Yes, it will be. Cheer us on or laugh at our attempts, but either way, you won’t want to miss it!

See you soon….too soon. January 1, 2010.
